7. What did the postmaster do then?

Answer: The postmaster first laughed. But then he became serious. He was deeply moved by the writer’s faith in God. He did not want to break this faith. So, he decided to collect the money and send it to Lencho.

8. Was Lencho surprised to find a letter for him with money in it ?

Answer: No, Lencho was not at all surprised to see the letter from the god with money inside it, his confidence and faith in god was such that he had expected that reply from god.

9. What made him angry ?

Answer: When he finished counting money. He found only seventy pesos. But he demanded hundred pesos. He was confident that God could never make a mistake nor deny him what he had requested. Therefore, he concluded that the post office employers must have taken the remaining thirty pesos.

Thinking about the text

1. Who does Lencho have complete faith in ? Which sentences in the story tell you this ?

Answer: Lencho has complete faith in od as he is instructed that god knows everything hand helps us in our problems. There are few sentences which shows this-

  • But in the hearts of all who lived in that solitary house in the middle of the valley, there was a single hope help from god.
  • All through the night, Lencho thought only of his one hope the help of god, whose eyes, as he had been instructed see everything , even what is deep in one’s conscience.
  • “God” he wrote. “If you don’t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year.”
  • He wrote “To god” on the envelop, put the letter inside and still troubled, went to town.
  • God could not have made a mistake nor could he have denied Lencho What he had requested.

2. Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho? Why does the sign the letter god ?

Answer: The postmaster sends money to Lencho in order to keep his faith in god alive and firm as he was completely moved by it.

When postmaster reads the letter of Lencho to God, he becomes serious and does not want to shake his faith and decided to answer the letter. He gathers money with the help of his post office employees and friends on behalf of God and signs the letter ‘God’ so that Lencho’s faith does not get shaken.

3. Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money him ? why or why not?

Answer: He did not try to find out who had sent the money to him because he ever suspected the presence of god and had complete faith in God. He could not believe that it could be anybody else other than him who would send him the money.

His faith in God was so strong that he believed that he had sent money to him for his problems.

4, Who does think has taken the rest of the money? That is the irony in the situation ?

Answer: Lencho thinks that the post office employee have taken the rest of the money as he ad demanded a hundred pesos from god and in the letter there was only seventy pesos and god cannot make such a mistake. So, Lencho assumes that they have stolen the money.

The irony in this situation is that Lencho suspects those people who helped him in his problem and tried to keep his faith alive in God.

5. Are there people like Lencho in the real world ? What kind of a person would you say he is ? You may select appropriate words from the box to answer the question.

Answer: It is almost impossible to find a person like Lencho as he is an unquestioning and native kind of person. In real world, people are selfish, and greedy and Lencho is totally lovable and different.

The house- the only one in the entire valley- sat on the crest of a low hill. From this height one could see the river and the field of ripe corn dotted with the flower that always promised a good harvest. The only thing the earth needed was a downpour or at least a shower. Throughout the morning Lencho- Who knew this fields intimately had done nothing else but see the sky towards the north- east.

“Now we’re really going to get some water, woman.” The woman who was preparing supper, replied, Yes, God willing”. The older boys were working in the field, while the smaller ones were playing near the house until the woman called to them all, “Come for dinner”.

I was during the meal that, just as Lencho had predicted, big drops of rain began to fall. In the north-east huge mountains of clouds could be seen approaching. The air was fresh and sweet.

The man went out for no there reason than to have the pleasure of feeling the rain on his body, and when he returned he exclaimed, “There aren’t raindrops falling from the sky, they are new coins. The big drops are ten cent pieces and the little ones are fives.”

With a satisfied expression he regarded the field of ripe corn with its flowers, draped in a curtain of rain.

But suddenly a strong wind began to blow and along with the rain very large hailstones began to fall.

These truly did resemble new silver coins, The boys, exposing themselves to the rain, ran out to collect the frozen pearls.

“It’s really getting had now, ” exclaimed the man. “I hope it passes quickly. For an hour hail rained on the house,

the garden, the hillside, the cornfield, on the whole valley. The field was white, as if covered with salt.

Not a leaf remained on the trees. The corn was totally destroyed. The flowers were gone from the plants. Lencho’s soul was filled with sadness.

He began to write a letter which he himself carry to town and place in the mail. It was nothing less than a letter to god.

He wrote, “If you don’t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year. I need hundred pesos in order to sow my field again and to live until the crops comes, because the hailstorm….”

He wrote ‘To god’ on the envelope, put the letter inside and, still troubled, went to town. At the post office, he placed a stamp on the letter and dropped into the mailbox.

The postmaster a fat, amiable fellow also broke out laughing, but almost immediately he turned serious and, tapping the letter on his desk, commented, what faith! He himself gives part of his salary, and several friends of his were obliged to give something ‘ for an act of charity’.

It was impossible for him to gather together the hundred pesos, so he was able to send the farmer only a little more than half. He put the money in an envelope addressed to Lencho and with it a letter containing only a single word signature: God.
